Songezo Jim joins most of our epic tours from Knysna to Stellenbosch as the tour leader. This professional cyclist made history in 2015 when he became the first black South African to ride the Vuelta (Tour of Spain). He also had the same distinction in the Giro d’Italia of 2016. Jim is from the Eastern Cape, lived many years in Italy, but is currently based in Fishhoek - Cape Town.
Jim wants to change children’s lives the same way his life has changed through cycling, so in 2016 he opened a cycling academy at the Masiphumelele township in Fishhoek. "I have seen how cycling has changed my life. I come from a very poor community and I know what goes on in townships, where there are drugs, alcohol and abuse, and the main reason is to take kids out of these situations" he says.
A few years ago, Jim received a donation of 15 bicycles from a Dutch organisation, and that helped to kick start his academy. “I want to give opportunities to our children so that they can be successful in life, through studying and riding bikes" While he is working on finding a new team to race with, he is in desperate need of more bicycles, helmets, spare parts and cycle clothing. Any donations of these items, big or small, are very welcome.
